QYO invites you to experience the amazing artistry of some of Australia’s finest young string players at two free recitals in October.
The Finalists and Recitalists of the 2012 National Youth Concerto Competition will perform at the 4MBS Performance Studio on Wednesday 24 October from 6.00pm to 7.30pm and at the Theme & Variations Showroom on Friday 26 October from 6.00pm to 7.30pm.
Violinists Grace Clifford, Harry Ward and Emma Zhuang, all from NSW, are the 2012 finalists competing for the national prize. Four more string players have been selected as recitalists, performing in recitals across Brisbane, and accompanying the finalists as members of the Queensland Youth Symphony. Two Queenslanders, Sam Lucas (cello, from Montville) and Sally Law (violin, from Brisbane), are joined by Phoebe Gardner (violin) and Waynne Kwon (cello) from NSW.
Recitals during the NYCC Finals Week will be presented at Brisbane Boys’ College, Jean Paul College, Kenmore State High School, Mansfield State High School, Somerville House and St Peter’s Lutheran College, as well as the two recitals open to the public at the 4MBS Performance Studio and Theme and Variations Showroom.
About the competition:
Presented by Queensland Youth Orchestras (QYO), the NYCC is the most significant competition in Australia for aspiring young string players aged 17 and under. The 2012 winner will receive a $3,000 prize and joins the ranks of some of this country’s greatest musicians, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Richard Tognetti, conductor Nicholas Milton, violin soloists Jane Peters and Ray Chen, and cello soloist Li Wei Qin.
The competition is being supported for the tenth consecutive year by Miss Irene Lee in memory of her friend, Dr Dorothea Sandars. Miss Irene Lee passed away in June 2012.
Accompanied by the Queensland Youth Symphony and conductor John Curro, the String sensations concert will feature the three finalists in violin concertos by Barber, Glazunov and Saint-Saëns.
