Theme & Variations Piano Services in Far North Queensland June / July 2008

Theme & Variations Piano Services are proud to have been a part of the Music Teacher’s Association of Queensland’s workshop series in Townsville – the Alan Lane Memorial Weekend – 29th to 30th June 2008.

International and national presenters, teachers from all over Queensland and local students had access to a Steinway Concert Grand and were able to gain an insight into how to perform on a quality piano.

Steinway Artist, Kathron Sturrock, was one of the esteemed team of visiting tutors.  She conducted several piano Master-classes over the two days for advanced piano students from the local area.  She arrived in Townsville from her home in London only a few days prior to the weekend where she is a professor at the Royal College of Music.  She is a part of the London-based chamber ensemble Fibonacci Sequence who are featuring in the upcoming Australian Festival of Chamber Music being held in Townsville from 4th – 11th July 2008. kathron_sturrock_mtaq_masterclass_townsville_30_june_2008.jpg

Other presenters included pianists Glen Riddle and Sonny Chua, both from Victoria.  Theme & Variations company director, Ara Vartoukian, also presented a session to the music teachers about the importance of temperament in tuning and other technical matters relating to the piano that perhaps the general public are not aware of when they maintain their piano over a long period of time.

The Alan Lane Memorial Weekend takes its name from the late Assoc. Prof. Alan Lane, who hailed from the United Kingdom but spent most of his life in Queensland as a respected piano, theory, composition and musicianship teacher along with his activities as an examiner, presenter and mentor to many over the last few decades.  piers_and_jack_mtaq_recital_townsville_30_june_2008.jpg

The idea is to honour his name by presenting a series of weekends that help local youth through contact with international artists.  His son, Dr Piers Lane, a Steinway Artist, is the Artistic Director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music.  Piers, Kathron, and violinist Jack Liebeck concluded the weekend with a short recital.

More Master-classes are planned during the Australian Festival of Chamber Music as part of the Winterschool.
