Theme & Variations technician, Paul Knight, is half-way through the painstaking process of restoring a Steinway grand piano in our Brisbane workshop. The Model A is expected to be finished mid – February 2012.
This grand was originally crafted in 1915 in New York. Like the majority of restorations carried out at Theme & Variations, the frame was removed and resprayed. New strings and keys are being fitted and new parts including damper and sostenuto system.
In 2011, Paul completed another round of training at the Steinway factory in Hamburg. It is his second time he travelled to Germany to learn from the leaders in the field. Topics included voicing and damper regulation on Steinways from the 1960s and 1970s. Paul has completed many restorations in the last few years including various models such as D, C, B, A, L, K and Z. Some of these include those dated back to the 1860s.
Theme & Variations has an ongoing commitment to ensuring technicians are up-to-date with the latest trends as well as learning from those in the factory who have skills that have been passed down through generations.
