‘Talk with the Techsperts’ with Musica Viva

This month Theme & Variations presented a ‘Talk to the Techsperts‘ segment with their piano technicians, before the 31st August Musica Viva concert of acclaimed pianist, Paul Lewis.  Before a stellar performance of Beethoven and Brahms at the City Recital Hall, Angel Place, the Theme & Variations Team held a Q&A / interview style talk with Andrew Rumsey.  All three piano technicians took part, including Ara Vartoukian (Head Technician and Director), Kenneth Hatfield and Julian Morgan-Smith.

This Q&A was a different style of talk to what we have been involved with previously, so it was interesting to see how it would turn out.  Discussed with the panel were questions like:

  • What was the most random tuning job you’ve ever had?

  • What job do you like the least?

  • How has the piano developed over time?

  • What has been your closest call during a performance?

  • Do piano technicians get nervous?

  • What is the oldest piano you have tuned?

  • Is it stressful being a piano technician – the list goes on!

After such a good response from audience members, we will definitely consider a similar talk in the future!  After the talk, Paul Lewis dazzled everyone with his Beethoven Sonata No.30 Op.109, Brahms Intermezzi Op.117, Brahms Ballades Op.10 and Beethoven Sonata No.32 Op.111.
