On Friday 10th June, Lang Lang visited Theme & Variations Piano Services in Willoughby. His visit prompted us to start a local version of the famous Hollywood ‘Walk of Fame’ with the creation of our own ‘Steinway Wall of Fame’.

The ‘Steinway Wall of Fame’ will become our collection of Steinway Artists’ fingerprints and signatures left on the keyboard of a Steinway concert grand. Lang Lang had the honour of being our first artist to start it off and he chose Middle C.

Apart from leaving his mark behind, Lang Lang found time to catch up with some customers who recently purchased a Steinway and spent time getting to know our team. A big thanks to Lang Lang for taking the time out to visit our store in his busy rehearsal and concert schedule.

Photos from Lang Lang’s visit are up on our Facebook page. Find and like us on Facebook! We’d love to hear your feedback.

It is always a wonderful occasion when Steinway Artist, Alexander Gavrylyuk is back in Sydney to perform. During this week, Theme & Variations were lucky to have Alexander drop by our showroom so that we were able to collect our second Steinway Artist fingerprint in as many weeks for our Steinway Wall of Fame. Alexander chose to leave his print on Note A above Middle C.

Theme & Variations has known Alexander since he was only 12 and watched him grow not only into a wonderful and generous human being, but also as an amazing artist. To read more about him and his journey so far, click here to read his recent interview with Limelight magazine.

For those of you have not heard Alexander play, we encourage you to make bookings now. His only performance in Sydney will be on Friday 24th June 2011 at the City Recital Hall, Angel Place. To see his programme and make bookings visit the City Recital Hall website. We look forward to seeing you there.

Theme & Variations Piano Services has just received several copies of Anna Goldsworthy’s book, PIANO LESSONS which recalls her first steps towards a life in music from childhood piano lessons to international success as a pianist. The books would make a wonderful gift to somebody who is currently learning the piano, or, somebody who simply enjoys a good read and good music. Each copy is $22.95 + postage.

To celebrate the book’s arrival into Theme & Variations, we are giving one away to a subscriber in NSW and one away to a subscriber in QLD. To win, simply email with your name, suburb, phone number and use ‘Piano Lesson’ as your subject line. We will be drawing the winner on Monday 27th June. GOOD LUCK!

Watch Piano Lessons come to life!

Recently, Theme & Variations found a small, dusty old book from a retiring piano technician entitled ‘STEINWAY’. Illustrated and designed by Susanne Suba for Steinway & Sons New York in 1948, the book is a beautiful account of the Steinway family and piano (but gives no credit to an author). Theme & Variations would like to share this find with our readers, and starting from the next issue of SOUNDBOARD, we will upload one chapter at a time to our brand new website for you to download and share.
