Piano Tuning, Regulation and Voicing
We promote excellence in pianos, and therefore our technicians are given the opportunity to further their knowledge by training at the Steinway Academy at Steinway & Sons Hamburg.
Theme & Variations prides itself on excellence in piano tuning and servicing, which is why we look after pianos for many institutions, concert venues, colleges and schools in New South Wales, Queensland and Melbourne.
The Head Office at Theme & Variations Piano Services is located at 451 Willoughby Road, Willoughby in Sydney. The Sydney office boasts a large premise containing a showroom and performance space, two private teaching studios, a downstairs workshop for repairs and conference room. Proud supporters of local Sydney music organisations, Theme & Variations are the Piano Technicians of choice for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Musica Viva, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and more.
Full-time technician AJ Hall is responsible for service work for QLD as well as minor repairs and restorations done at our Brisbane workshop. Proud supporters of the local Queensland music community, Theme & Variations are longstanding partners of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, the Queensland Festival, the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, the Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition and the Queensland Conservatorium.
Full time technician Julian Morgan-Smith is responsible for all Victoria-based service operations. Julian graduated from the Australasian School of Piano Technology in Melbourne. He is a member of the Piano Tuners’ Guild of Victoria and is a member of the Australasian Piano Tuners’ and Technicians’ Association.
Apart from piano tuning for major music organisations and venues, we also service thousands of private pianos. Pianos in private residences should ideally be tuned twice a year or once a year at a minimum.
On top of tuning, pianos also need regulation and voicing.
- Regulation is the adjustment of the piano’s action to ensure a smooth and even touch throughout the keyboard. It helps improve the touch when playing.
- Voicing is the manipulation of a piano’s hammers to even out a piano’s overall tone. It can also be carried out to brighten or soften the character of a piano’s tone depending on the environment that it’s sitting in. Voicing can often address common complaints such as a ‘piano sounding tinny’, ‘too harsh’ or ‘too muffled’.
Our technicians can let you know during a tuning service if your piano might need a regulation or voicing. All our pianos come with a complimentary service that includes tuning, regulation and voicing.
Whether it be concert preparation, inventory maintenance or home tuning, we are skilled and trained to ensure your piano or fleet of pianos can be the best they can be.
