As a major milestone, Theme & Variations Piano Services celebrated their 30th Anniversary in 2015. Having supplied pianos to the top concert halls, schools and teaching institutions in the country for over 30 years, they set the benchmark for the highest number of new Steinway & Sons piano sales for any individual dealership in Australia. Currently they have a large range of pre-loved pianos of all different makes and models, therefore making a trip to Theme & Variations an ideal destination for the perfect piano.

Anita Levy

Anita graduated from Sydney University as an architect and went on to a successful career working on a number of major commercial and residential projects.  She joined the architectural practice which completed the Sydney Opera House and worked on that major project for five years.

After its completion she continued working as an architect in private practice.  She was also a volunteer with the charity group Quest for Life with Petrea King for many years.  Her leisure interests include the piano, attending concerts, photography, creating books, theatre, movies, travel, walking, and enjoying life together with her husband, children and grandchildren.

Ara Vartoukian founded Theme & Variations Piano Services in 1985 as a service/piano repair company and expanded the business to include a retail showroom. Prior to forming Theme & Variations, Ara was lecturer in charge at the School of Piano Tuning & Technology at Sydney Conservatorium of Music from 1982 and 1985 and has also participated in piano technology conventions across Australia and New Zealand.

In 1997, Ara was awarded the exclusive dealership for Steinway & Sons pianos in NSW and in 2005 was also awarded the exclusive dealership for Steinway & Sons in QLD.  Focusing more on piano maintenance and service, Theme & Variations transitioned to become a Steinway Service Center for Australasia in 2015.  Ara has gained vast experience studying with many piano manufacturing companies around the world including Steinway, Yamaha, Ibach, Grotrian Steinweg, Baldwin, Bosendorfer, Bechstein and Young Chang. As well as taking care of pianos across many private homes, educational institutions and performance venues around Sydney, Ara also helps the many pianos that come into Theme & Variations find the right place to call home.

In 2016, Ara was awarded the Order of Australia medal for his ‘service to music as a piano technician, and through support of the arts'.

Hong Lam

Graduate of The ASPT

Hong Lam began his training in Melbourne under Brent Ottley at the Australasian School of Piano Technology.  A top graduate of his class in 2016, Hong is a new addition to the technical team.  Hong is registered piano technician of the Australasian Piano Tuners and Technicians Association and an Associate of the Piano Tuners Guild of America.

Julian Morgan-Smith


Graduate of The ASPT

Julian graduated from the Australasian School of Piano Technology in Melbourne, taught by senior Yamaha Technician Brent Ottley. He went on to operate as a self employed technician, working at venues such as Federation Square, Melbourne Town Hall, Sidney Myer Music Bowl and The Falls Music Festival. Julian was hand selected by Ara to join the Theme & Variations team at the start of 2014.  Julian now looks after all Melbourne-based operations at Theme & Variations, including tuning, servicing and restorations.


Ken Hatfield


Diploma in Piano Technology (Sydney Conservatorium of Music)

Ken graduated from the Conservatorium of Music’s Piano Technology Course with the highest marks of all graduates in 2006 and was immediately taken on board at Theme & Variations. Ken currently services pianos all around Sydney and has trained with the Steinway Academy in Hamburg to complete an advanced technician’s course to further his knowledge on service and restoration of pianos.


Nyree Vartoukian


Nyree Vartoukian founded Theme & Variations Piano Services with Ara Vartoukian.   Nyree enjoys hosting events in the showroom and looking after customers & musicians who frequent the store.  She is always thrilled when she is able to assist buyers find the best piano possible in which to invest for both private investors and education & concert institutions.

Along with Ara, Nyree champions the cause of countless arts and community organisations along the east coast of Australia.  Nurturing the development and career of young musicians has always been a focus which has led to the formation of a Foundation by a group of key community members to assist young pianists.

AJ Hall Piano Technician

AJ Hall

AJ is a qualified and experienced piano technician and bass player.  AJ is a graduate of the Australasian Piano Technology Tuning School and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University.

AJ carries out regular tuning and servicing of concert grands, grand and upright pianos in venues such as the Nickson Room (University of Queensland), Ghostgum Recording Studio (Cannon Hill Anglican College), Redland Performing Arts Centre, Pilbeam Theatre (Rockhampton), Queensland Ballet, The Moreton Club, The Queensland Club;  colleges such as Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie), Townsville Grammar; events such as Brisbane Festival (at QPAC, Brisbane Powerhouse, Spiegeltent, Metro Arts etc), Australian Festival of Chamber Music (Townsville and Cairns), Queensland Music Festival, Bangalow Festival, DeClassified Music, Suzuki Queensland, Topology Unplugged, Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition (at Queensland Conservatorium) as well as private customers throughout the east-coast of Australia encompassing Steinway, Boston, Essex and many other brands of pianos.
